With so many new genetic discoveries, technologies, and applications, the number of companies offering genetic testing has skyrocketed over the past few years.
As a genetics professional, it is incredibly exciting to me that the genetics field is becoming more accessible to more people.
But not all genetic tests are the same, and not all genetic testing companies offer accurate and useful services. How is a person to sort through all the options to make an informed decision?
Now, an independent lab testing group has made it easier to decide…
The non-profit American Clinical Laboratory Association recently published guidelines on selecting a genetic testing company. In releasing the guidelines, ACLA pointed out that while genetic testing is a remarkable science, “not all genetic tests are created equal.” The laboratory association encourages consumers to ask:
- Is the test performed in a laboratory that is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, a law that requires medical labs to meet standards for quality, accuracy, safety and validity of the tests they perform?
- Is a genetic counselor, physician or other knowledgeable health professional available to assist you in selecting tests and interpreting results?
- Do the claims seem hard to believe?
- Are other products, such as nutritional supplements being sold along with the test? If they are, caution.
- Does the provider of the service offer adequate assurances that your genetic information will be kept private and secure?
Genetic testing providers are not equal. Different companies offer varying levels of service, security and benefits. At Navigenics, we take great pride in the fact that we possess all the qualities the association recommends consumers look for in a genetic testing company – and none of those that should be avoided.
Navigenics is an industry leader, with a CLIA-certified laboratory, a staff of board-certified genetic counselors, and strict security policies, that all ensure your genetic test results are accurate, useful and kept private. We do not sell products based on genetic tests. Our genetic counselors can help you understand your results and what steps can be taken next, so you can work with your physician to create a personal health plan.
Genetic tests, the association emphasizes, “will change the future of health care – with better disease detection and personalized therapy.”
Selecting the best genetic testing company is an essential part of that process.
